Every believer in Christ has a desire to honor Him in everything. We get examples from the Word of God of believers such as David and Abraham who, despite failure, were characterized by following God according to His mind. We are also warned by the examples of Lot, Obadiah, and Jehoshaphat who lived by a mixture of principles.

Every true believer in Christ has two natures. The first is what he or she possesses as a child of Adam - it is a nature shared by all. The second is that divine life which we now possess as children of God. These are sometimes referred to as our old and new natures - one comes with natural birth, the other with new birth. This subject is not an academic one. If we do not understand that we, as believers, possess a new nature, and that our old nature is dead in God's sight, it will result in a frustrating struggle. Throughout the history of Christianity many a saint has sought to subdue the flesh and eradicate sin, not understanding that it is altogether done with in God's sight, and that he or she can live in the good of a new nature and the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Apostle Paul wrote the first epistle to the Corinthians to correct a number of disorders among them. In the main, it produced positive results, although after writing it, he was concerned as to whether or not it would. Nevertheless, there were good results; they mourned over their wrongs and repented and set those things right. Paul’s reasons for writing this second epistle were: --To explain why he didn’t come to Corinth when he said that he would. --To exhort the saints at Corinth to show grace and forgive the repentant man who had been excommunicated. --To expose an element of his detractors, whom he calls “false apostles” and “deceitful workers,” who were doing Satan’s work among the Corinthians in causing them to distrust the Apostle and question his ministry. --To encourage the saints at Corinth to be engaged in a ministry of giving. The result of the writing of the epistle is that we have been given a wonderful picture of the characteristics of a true Christian minister, as seen in Paul himself.

“But His citizens hated Him, and sent a message after Him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us” (Luke 19:14).

When the Lord Jesus came to this earth as a man, as we have commented before, He presented Himself to the Jews as their rightful King. He gave all the evidence needed to show them who He was, yet they refused to believe on Him.

After the Lord Jesus had been crucified, had died, and was risen and ascended back to heaven, the disciples and others again preached forgiveness through the name of the Lord Jesus. But once again the Jewish nation rejected that preaching, and stoned Stephen to death. You can read about this in Acts 7. This was the messenger whom they sent after the Lord Jesus, effectively saying that they would not have the Lord Jesus to reign over them.

In a coming day some of them will recognize Him as having been the true Messiah, and in that day they will own Him as their rightful King, when He comes in power and glory. How good it is for you and me to own Him now as the Son of God, and the rightful Lord of all!

Growing in Grace
“I am a companion of all them that fear Thee” (Psalm 119:63).
Yesterday we talked about friends. Today let us think about what the difference might be between friends and companions. I think of companions as more of an action word. It pictures to us friends working together.
Paul had a special companion in a young man named Epaphroditus. In Philippians 2:25 he says, “Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labor, and fellow soldier.” According to the verses here, he had been sick, and almost died. Paul says he would have had “sorrow upon sorrow” if this had happened. He really loved and appreciated his companion and friend! They were working and travelling together. Back in the first century (a long, long time ago!) travel was not as it is today. It involved miles of walking, sea voyages that often included storms and shipwreck, sleeping in the cold and not having any “fast food” from the drive-thru when you were really hungry!
So, can you be a companion today? There are lots of opportunities to work together for the Lord with others. Picking up the hymn books after Sunday school, cleaning the meeting room together or maybe going with others to sing to some elderly people in a nursing home. We had a young brother travel with us on a long trip to a foreign country, who said, “I just want to come along and carry your luggage!” He was a real companion and did a wonderful job in serving the Lord in that way.
The Apostle John mentions companions in Revelation 1:9. “I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation.” If we are going through a tough time, how wonderful to have someone to go through it with us. I am very sure that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were “companions” in that fiery furnace trial they endured together and with the Lord.

Our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep. (Hebrews 13:20)
The chief Shepherd.1 – I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. … My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.2
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.3
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.4 – I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.5 – I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick.6 – Ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.7

Comfort of the Scriptures
“Unto Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father; to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen” (Rev. 1:5-6).
Every blood-washed sinner is a priest, “having ... boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,” and is invited to “come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” As believer-priests, we “also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” And what are these “spiritual sacrifices” which we are “to offer up”? First of all, we are to offer ourselves, to “present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.” Then, having offered ourselves, “by Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” Such is to Him “an odor of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well-pleasing to God.”
We offer ourselves to our God,
As sacrifices living;
We are transformed, our lives are changed;
Our lives now taste of heaven.
